COLUMBUS, Ohio - Unemployment in central Ohio in January was at its highest level in nearly 27 years, flirting with double digits for the first time since 1983, according to figures released by the state Wednesday.
The report from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services showed unemployment in the eight-county Columbus metropolitan area was 9.8 percent, its highest level since June, 1983, when the rate reached 10.1 percent.
The increase follows a hike in December, which had been preceded by a dip in November.
Delaware County enjoyed the area's -- and the state's -- lowest unemployment rate at 8.4 percent, followed by Franklin County at 9.4 percent, up from 8.9 in December.
Unemployment in Columbus was 9.5 percent, its highest level since March of 1984.
The highest unemployment rate in central Ohio was in Pickaway County: 13.3 percent.
The state wide unemployment rate in January was 11.8 percent.
